In the center of Florence (Firenze) Italy, just across from the main railway station, is the famous church and adjoining cloister known as Santa Maria Novella. It was the first great basilica of Florence and the site was originally assigned to the Dominican Order in 1221 and church construction began in 1246 and eventually consecrated in 1420.
